Learner Plates: What UK Law Actually Requires

If you’re learning to drive in the UK, fitting L-plates correctly isn’t optional – it’s a legal requirement, and getting it wrong can mean points on a licence you don’t even have yet.

The law requires a red ‘L’ on a white background, visible from the front and rear of the car, at all times while a learner is driving. Magnetic and suction-cup plates are both legal, provided they’re securely fixed and clearly visible – not peeling off or obscured by dirt.

Many learners forget to remove plates once they’ve passed, which is also worth avoiding since it can affect how other drivers anticipate your movements on the road.

In Wales, green ‘D’ plates are used for learners driving in Welsh, alongside or instead of L-plates. Northern Ireland has its own equivalent rules too, so it’s worth checking local requirements if you’re learning outside England.

A good set of L-plates is cheap, reusable, and one less thing to worry about on test day – which is exactly why it’s worth getting right from lesson one.
